Major infrastructure projects have become one of the foremost areas of dialogue between architecture, engineering and urban planning. No longer merely functional works supporting mobility, they are now recognised as catalysts for urban transformation, capable of enhancing public spaces and contributing to the sustainability and regeneration of cities.
This is the theme of one of the events in Cersaie 2026's cultural programme, "Building, Dwelling, Thinking", organised in collaboration with THE PLAN. On Wednesday 23 September at 10.30 am, The Square will host the conference "The Architecture of Infrastructure", focusing on the design of Turin Metro Line 2, one of the most significant infrastructure projects currently under development in Italy. The speakers will include the project's key stakeholders: UNStudio, the internationally renowned architectural practice; Settanta7, one of Italy's leading integrated design firms; and Infra.To, the company responsible for the construction and management of the City of Turin's strategic infrastructure.
The conference will open with remarks by Nicola Leonardi, Co-founder & Managing Editor of THE PLAN, followed by an introduction to Cersaie by Filippo Manuzzi, Chairman of the Promotional Activities and Trade Fairs Commission of Confindustria Ceramica. The design of the new Metro Line 2 will then be presented by Marianthi Tatari, Director, and Raul Forsoni, Associate & Project Manager at UNStudio, together with Daniele Rangone, Co-founder of Settanta7, and Carla Pepe, Sole Project Manager at Infra.To. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion with an opportunity for questions from the audience.
The discussion will address the key challenges of contemporary infrastructure design, including the integration of transport systems and architecture, the quality of station environments, environmental sustainability, technological innovation, and the role of infrastructure in shaping urban development. The conference offers a valuable opportunity to explore design methodologies, decision-making processes and strategic visions through a dialogue between designers and client representatives.
