Kane became ninth in League history with title of all-time scoring leader among U.S.-born players
Patrick Kane had a second-period assist against longtime opponent Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals on Thursday to reach 1,375 career points and pass Mike Modano (1,374) for the most by a U.S.-born player in NHL history.
* Kane became the ninth in League history with the title of all-time NHL scoring leader among U.S.-born players and first since Modano, who tallied two goals against the Sharks to pass Phil Housley (1,232) on Nov. 7, 2007. That came just one week after Kane received the League’s “Rookie of the Month” honors and four months after Kane was chosen by Chicago with the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NHL Draft.
* Kane received some advice from Modano early in his career about adapting to professional hockey. Kane also praised Modano just before he passed Housley as the all-time NHL scoring leader among U.S.-born players.
* Kane passed Modano for the sixth-highest point total by a No. 1 pick in League history and most out of the eight U.S.-born first-overall picks in the NHL Draft. That group includes ESPN analyst Erik Johnson, who was between the benches at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday.
* Four of the nine all-time NHL points leaders among U.S.-born players skated for Detroit, with Kane following Modano (2010-11), Reed Larson (1976-77 – 1985-86) and Cecil Dillon (1939-40). Kane has spent his entire 19-season career with Original Six franchises, joining the Red Wings after parts of 16 campaigns with the Blackhawks (2007-08 – 2022-23) and one with the Rangers (2022-23).
* Kane had a League-leading 106 points in 2015-16 and became the first U.S.-born player in NHL history to win the Art Ross Trophy. That was after he helped the Blackhawks capture three Stanley Cup championships over a six-season span from 2009-10 to 2014-15.
* Kane has recorded 90 points while facing the Blue Jackets, his most against one opponent and the highest total versus the franchise in NHL history. Kane became the third U.S.-born player in League history with 90 points against one opponent, following Modano versus the Coyotes/Jets (95) and Brian Leetch against the Penguins (92).
* Kane and Jonathan Toews both factored on the same goal 301 times, marking the third-highest total by a pair of teammates in Blackhawks history behind Steve Larmer and Denis Savard (396x) as well as Stan Mikita and Kenny Wharram (339x). Kane and Alex DeBrincat have both factored on the same goal 202 times (including 67x since reuniting in Detroit), the highest total by a pair of U.S.-born teammates in League history.
* Kane has collected 645 points at United Center, including four in three games as the road team at “The Madhouse on Madison.” Kane has 43 points in 36 contests at American Airlines Center, where Modano called home for eight seasons from 2001-02 to 2009-10.
* Modano, who played each of his first four seasons in Minnesota and is a hockey operations advisor for the Wild, was at the Red Wings-Wild game Jan. 22 and introduced Kane to his kids afterward. Kane needs 20 assists to pass Housley (894) for the most by a U.S.-born player in NHL history and 17 points to overtake Brett Hull (1,391) for the League’s highest total by a skater with U.S. nationality.![]()
