Peachy Deegan and the totally awesome Chris Ryan, General Manager of Van Cortlandt Golf course, whom we have been recommending since 2015! We last visited last fall.
We know our readers love to have it all in life, and when you reside in Manhattan it is not easy to find a golf course or get to a golf course. Van Cortlandt is truly a secret getaway you ought to know about and capitalize on! It is one of the best natural environments you can discover in New York City, and they have been at it since 1895! Eighteen hilly holes make it a great adventure and the landscape is truly miraculous to find in such close proximity.

Van Cortlandt Golf Course is located in the North Bronx close to the Yonkers border. It is the oldest public golf course in the USA. Known as “Vanny” by the locals, it is the most easily accessible NYC course to mass transportation. The # 1 train leaves you just a short walk to the course. Over the years many famous people have played at Van Cortlandt. They include Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Joe Lewis and the Three Stooges.
Under new management, Van Cortlandt features seven new greens, new tee boxes, additional cart paths, improved bunkers, and dramatically improved drainage. The cost of these improvements approximates one and a half million dollars. The architect in charge of this renovation is Stephen Kay. This golf course, situated in a park-like setting, is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of NYC without ever having to leave the City.
Both Sous Chef Arnaud Ba and The Turn Attendant Alicia Alvarez were total peaches to encounter on our culinary aspects of Vanny!
Chris Ryan really has built a wonderful staff around him, comprehensively upbeat, professional and accurate, friendly and fun! Meet Starter Larry Pettinato! He is like the Human Green Flag waving at you telling you when it is your turn to start driving the ball at the first tee. Of course you know women's is red, men's is blue and black is professional. You definitely will not feel like you are in the Bronx once you walk along the golf course path to get to the clubhouse. The subway, which is above ground at this end, meets the park. Peachy suggests bright neon balls to see them better among the leaves! To be a great golfer, you really have to go far more often than she does right this second....

Of course, get a golf cart and this is probably the most peaceful driving experience anyone could have in New York City! It truly is a vacation in a day that appeals to new golfers and experienced golfers alike, and everyone inbetween!
